This Fall, Dead Audio hosts EXPANSION, Lexington’s Psych Rock Music Festival taking place at Cosmic Charlie’s (9/13) and The Burl (9/15). In anticipation, we are shining the spotlight on each performer on the lineup to give you a preview of what you can expect from the festival’s acts. Tickets are currently on sale via the EXPANSION Kickstarter.
Headlining EXPANSION 2019 at The Burl on Sept. 14 is mulit-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter DEAKIN, the solo artist best known as a member of the experimental psychedelic pop outfit Animal Collective, a band that has played a major role in defining the state of psychedelic music for nearly two decades.
In 2016, DEAKIN released his solo debut Sleep Cycle, a short, yet substantial record that sometimes sounds like the best dreamy segments from Animal Collective albums. “Golden Chords,” a standout track , is filled with earnest lyrics, dreamy psych folk, layers of acoustic guitars, synths and dreamy soundscapes, harkening back to the Collective’s Campfire Songs. Other songs on the album like “Footy” are explosive, where the tension and intensity of the lyrics match the blaring instrumentals. Other examples of DEAKIN’s work can be found on Animal Collective’s “Wide Eyed” of which he is the main vocalist and on Feels and Strawberry Jam, playing heavily on both albums.
After taking a hiatus with Animal Collective during the Painting With Tour, DEAKIN is back with the boys as a permanent addition on Avey Tare’s current tour, and is also confirmed to join the band for their headlining performance at this year’s Desert Daze Festival. DEAKIN’s headlining set at EXPANSION 2019 at The Burl that is sure to be filled with rich, lush production, and a live show that is exciting and visceral, but at times laid back and woozy. His performance will also be heightened with the inclusion of real-time audio-reactive visuals from projection-mapping artist Psensibil (visual artist for Sweet Country Meat Boys and WHAMMOTH).
